The monks of St. Norbet began brewing this way back in the 13th century for the surrounding community and continued to do so for many years until the French Revolution saw the abolishment of the abbey. However during the 1950s an agreement between the monks and the brewer Albert Lootvoot saw its production begin again with the abbey continuing to gain proceeds from sales.
