Brewery Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat, Breendonk

At the end of the First World War the Moortgat brothers brewed Victory Ale to commemorate the event, but during the 1920s a local shoemaker (as legend has it) described the beer as “nen echten duvel” (a real devil) and the Duvel part stuck ever since. Duvel still uses yeast that stems from the original batch which was brought in from Scotland by Albert Moortgat during a business tour of the UK.
