Copperhead Ale

What am I drinking?
To celebrate the start of the weekend, I thought it would be appropriate to try a beer from the kind guys at Around The World as the resident #biertaster.

The first offering is a Copperhead Ale by Fordham Brewing Company from Dover, Delaware in the United States. An amber style beer, it offers a fair 5.0% volume and comes with the following tasting notes:

Famous for its signature balanced flavour and impeccable smoothness, this amber style American ale blends caramelised malted barley with a pronounced hop character. Great with roast pork, salmon, smoked sausage, cheeses and maple syrup.

How was it?
Copperhead Ale pours with plenty of energy which quickly yields a small white head and hastily settles and clears, leaving a slightly hazed amber beer to tuck into.
A thorough rotation and some deep sniffing allowed me to make out some subtle biscuit aromas as well as a little toffee. The malt aromas were far more prominent than the hops which offered only a hint of fruitiness.
The flavour offered much of the same notes as the aroma but it’s easier to make out those hops through the dark fruit flavour this hits you with along with the sweet biscuit. Copperhead finally guides you into a lightly bittered finish with a strange faint metallic after-taste.

My Opinion
Copperhead Ale is a pleasant, medium bodied beer and offers a good balance in terms of aroma and flavour.
Although not mind blowing, it would be a good place to start a session before moving onto those bigger and wilder flavours.
I mentioned a metallic flavour, which is in no way unpleasant. Possibly caused by minerals in the water or possible oxidisation, It was a little unexpected beyond the bitterness of the hops.
