Brasserie d’Achouffe – Houblon Chouffe

Have I got a gem of a review for you today courtesy of the guys at Bierkeller.

This beer originates from the small village of Achouffe in Belgium and is brewed by Brasserie d’Achouffe who have what I believe to be a pretty recognisable logo and marketing tool at their disposal. This comes in the form of a number of well dressed dwarves in compromising positions. Beers aren’t the only thing Brasserie d’Achouffe have dabbled in. They have also produced Esprit D’Achouffe, a spirit which is distilled from a 5 year old beer and a soft cheese called patachouffe.
With additional investment and guidance from Duvel Moortgat , their beers are being enjoyed in over 40 countries around the world.

Houblon Chouffe mixes the English tradition of IPAs, The American revolution of Imperial IPAs and is brewed the in the Belgian way. The result is a powerfully hopped beer which boasts a unique balance between the three styles. Plenty of malty body, hopped up and plenty of estery fruitiness.
At 9% ABV, this one is going to pack a punch.

From Its small stubby bottle, poured a crystal clear beer of golden colour with a hearty amount of energy. This produced a sizeable and lasting white topper along with plenty of fine carbonation bubbles running up the glass.
The aroma offered plenty of candy sweet maltyness, floral notes from the hops and estery notes leading towards the rose edge of the spectrum.
Houblon Chouffe delivers plenty of body resulting in a smooth drinking experience. Mountains of sweet maltyness kicks things off with a golden syrup flavour leading into equal portions of hoppy bitterness and that traditional Belgian fruitiness.
A Well balanced beer showing that that these three styles work together very well indeed.
The high strength doesn’t show in the flavour at all. Dangerously easy drinking.
